Your Guide To Makeup Expiration Dates

Save or Toss? Your Guide To Makeup Expiration Dates

Did you know that your favourite makeup products lounging on your vanity have an expiration date? No? Like food, your beauty products have a shelf life, so it may just be time to toss that mascara and foundation you've been holding on to because you need to use every last bit. While we know parting ways can be hard, old makeup is an invitation for a bacteria party on the skin and can cause unwanted breakouts, skin irritations, eye infections, and the list can go on and on.

Since the shelf life of your cosmetics varies from one product to another, we've put together a handy dandy guide below to help you keep track of what's still good and what has done its time. Keep in mind that your product life begins as soon as you open it, so here we go...

Mascara & Liquid Liner - Shelf Life: 3 months

If your mascara and liquid liner begin to dry out or the consistency changes, then it's time to toss. Experts suggest that you keep mascara and liquid liner no longer than 3 months, especially since they are used in such close proximity to the eyes, and can lead to itchiness, redness and even conjunctivitis. If you experience any of these symptoms, immediately throw away.

Foundation - Shelf Life: 6-12 months

Once you've opened your liquid or cream foundation, it's suggested that you discard within 6 months to a year. Is the colour starting to change? Is the formula starting to separate? Are you getting a streaky finish? These are key indicators that a foundation is past its prime.

FYI- Bacteria loves foundations that are water-based, and so repeatedly dipping your fingers and brushes directly into your foundation can increase bacterial growth. Instead, pour the foundation onto the back of your hand or on a mixing palette.

Concealer - Shelf Life: 1 year

The shelf life of concealers is pretty similar to that of foundations. Concealers can be kept up to a year, but after that, it's time to throw it out. A change in texture, color or smell means it has gone bad.

Powders (eyeshadows, blush, bronzer, etc.) - Shelf Life: 2 years

The good news about cosmetics in powder form such as eyeshadows, blushes, and bronzers, is that you get a whooping good 2 years before you have to get rid of them. Regardless, it is important that you keep the tools you use to apply these clean, keep your palettes closed and cover product jars to prevent them from coming in contact with dust and bacteria.

Lip Gloss & Lipstick - Shelf Life: 1-2 years

It's fine to keep lip glosses or lip oils up to 1 year, but if it starts to thicken or smell rancid, toss. Your lipstick collection on the other hand can last you up to 2 years, but kiss it goodbye if it starts to dry out, smell, or the colour changes.
